South Korean chip giant to sell Chinese factory? The official response has arrived

Date:2024-01-23

On January 23rd Beijing time, US media reported on Monday that the future of South Korean chip giant SK Hynix's factory in Dalian, China is uncertain due to the impact of US chip restrictions. US media believe that SK Hynix may consider selling this factory. SK Hynix denies this. In 2020, SK Hynix acquired this Dalian storage chip factory from Intel for $9 billion, hoping to expand production capacity and enter the cutting-edge chip field of China, the world's largest chip market.

However, the chip restriction regulations introduced by the United States have affected SK Hynix's investment plan, leading to uncertainty for the Dalian factory. At present, Intel's company logo is still hanging on the sea blue glass curtain wall of the Dalian factory. SK Hynix will pay the final installment of the factory acquisition transaction to Intel in 2025.

Last autumn, SK Hynix received good news. The company, along with another Korean chip manufacturer Samsung Electronics, has obtained an indefinite exemption from the United States to import American chip manufacturing equipment for factories in mainland China. However, this exemption cannot guarantee its long-term existence. Foreign media have stated that considering the possibility of Trump, the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination in the United States, winning the November presidential election and returning to the White House.

According to US media, SK Hynix may seek to reduce losses by selling its Dalian factory, but this decision is likely to still require approval from the US government as it is unlikely that the US will allow the factory to be sold to Chinese bidders. SK Hynix CEO Kwak Noh Jung stated at a press conference earlier this month that the US waiver "greatly reduces" the risk of SK Hynix operating in China.

SK Hynix denies the rumors of the sale of the Dalian factory. We have not considered selling the Dalian wafer fab at all. SK Hynix will maintain its business in China while complying with the regulations and laws of the jurisdiction where its business is located, and contribute to the development of the semiconductor industry The company stated.
